PRODUCTION INFORMATION
Perceptions of a Portrait is the second short film produced by 2tails films, a production company founded by Silvia Felce and Susan Hodgetts in 2005.
Their first short The Last Stop was shown at the Cannes, Deptford and Portobello film festivals and now they have joined forces for a bigger and more ambitious project, investigating physical and emotional perceptions, and the very modern desire to get noticed.
It was filmed over four days in November 2009 on location in a flat in Bermondsey, South London . The film was shot using the RED camera and has a duration of 12 and ½ minutes.
The perceptions of a portrait represent the different ways in which everybody can perceive the same thing in very different ways.
As the story unfolds, the slashing of the portrait allows writers Silvia Felce and Susan Hodgetts to delve deeper into the murky territory of emotional bonds, jealousies and betrayals.
"What we were interested in exploring are the emotions that art can create, and the artificial emotions that it can perpetuate in people: that artificial construct that surrounds it and the rise of the celebrity culture”, says Felce.
The first person on board was artist Martina Mollin, who was spotted by the producers on the Camberwell College of Art and Design’s website.
Hodgetts says "We were looking for an artist that had the sensibilities that we felt Max would have, and who viewed women in the way we thought Max would. Martina's work had the exact style that we were looking for, something very soft and feminine, seeing women through a soft-focus lens."
Having worked with Anna Wollin on their previous short film The Last Stop, the role of LAURA was written especially with Anna in mind. Marco Foschi for MAX was a lucky discovery.
When a casting director in Italy suggested that Felce have a look at Foschi’s résumé, Felce believed she had found her Max. “I saw a recording of a theatre piece he did for TV and I was completely spellbound by him, his voice and his eyes. He was Max!” Felce flew to meet him in Rome and he agreed to play the role.
The role of ANITA went to newcomer Lia Visva while Hodgetts took on the role of HEATHER and a selection of young up and coming actors from Central School of Speech and Drama was recruited to round out the cast.
The style of photography was crucial to the film, as, although it didn’t have to be intrusive, light and colour were important to enhance the continuous jumps in the time line of the narrative. Felce worked closely with DOP Doug Walshe to create an invisible yet poignant photography. “We played with different lighting and camera movements to focus on the different relationships between the different people, letting the camera observe that, sometimes in a kind of voyeuristic way, letting the characters being at the centre of everything while time moves around them” says Felce.
New artists like Spencer De Vere and Illegal Immigrant provided the songs for the soundtrack and It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry by Scottish rock band Glasvegas from their award winning first album was used for the final scenes.
“When I heard It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry I knew I wanted to end the story with this song. The lyrics seemed to tell the story in a way that almost exactly mirrors the images that were in my head”, says Felce.
Felce fell in love with the characters of Perceptions of a Portrait as she felt that there was much more beneath the surface with these intriguing characters, and she is working on developing a feature film based on the short film.
